Spotlight on...Mission Statement Kids on Campus is a rural community-university partnership that empowers underserved, at-risk children and their families in the realization of their full potential through educational, nutritional, and recreational opportunities. Since 1996, Kids on Campus has been engaging Appalachian area youth in quality out-of-school time programming. This grant-funded community partnership, which began as a means to serve summer meals to our children, has evolved to a year-round academic, enrichment, and recreation program serving over 800 children each year. With the understanding that education is a key factor in living a healthy and informed lifestyle, Kids on Campus strives to improve the health and welfare of our children through a holistic approach. Why do we do it? Nearly 16 million U.S. children - more than 1 in 5 - lived in poverty in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In move than a third of Ohio's 88 counties, child-poverty rates are above 25%, according to a recent report by Children's Defense Fund-Ohio. Nearly 1 in 3 Athens County children lives in poverty, according to Children's Defense Fund-Ohio. Our Goals: Provide children with the opportunity to enhance academic and life skills through high-quality out-of-school programming. Serve as a model program that will encourage and challenge other communities to develop partnerships to provide services for economically disadvantaged children. Want to
